Coventry Cathedral, Compline (night prayer) - May 2023

In May 2023, Sofia Karim’s work formed Compline (the weekly Night Prayer service) at Coventry Cathedral, as a call to action and prayer for justice. Pieces from the Turbine Bagh movement were displayed on the altar, and prayers were read and sung for the prisoners she was campaigning for. The service was dedicated to the BK16 prisoners in India, one of whom, 84-year-old Jesuit priest and tribal activist Father Stan Swamy, died in custody in July 2021, and Professor G.N. Saibaba who Karim campaigned for for four years. At the time he was serving a life sentence in India. He was released in 2024, and died within 7 months.

The event was part of the Divided Selves exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, curated by Hammad Nasar with Rosie Addenbrooke and Alice Swatton.

“In this busy world slow down at Compline, which marks our final prayer of the day…This time Compline will be touching on the themes of the Divided Selves exhibition. Divided Selves explores notions of belonging and living together at a time when the idea of nation is under stress, threatened by challenges ranging from populism to armed conflict.” Coventry Cathedral, May 2023
